Will Earthlings Become Martians?


Technology is driving the possibility of colonization on Mars. So what does colonization on Mars look like and what effect will that have on humans and is it all even worth it? 


Mars is the most capable planet for humans to colonize with our current technology. There are many exploration missions going on right now looking for water, other life, and the right conditions for human life. Elon Musk the world’s richest man is very set on sending people to mars he is investing billions into this mission and SpaceX. People are concerned for the health of planet Earth so it’s controversial if Elon should be spending that much on mars rather than then climate change or helping Earth. 

Shannon Stirone said in an article for CNBC “absolutely out in space.” She has serious concerns about the safety of Mars for humans. There are many concerns for humans ranging from freezing to death, to your blood boiling. There are also concerns about getting people to Mars. And because we have never put a person on Mars, we have no idea what other problems they may face.  How would a colony of people face the severe wind storms Mars generates? The success rate for launching rockets is 94 percent. This seems good on the surface, but six percent of people is a lot. Another large concern is bone density. On average a person loses one percent of their bone density for every month they are in space. The trip to Mars should take about seven months, causing seven percent bone density loss. This means that almost every person going to Mars would have severe back pain and brittle bones. 

The technology needed for Mars space travel is a key player in accomplishing it. Some technology NASA is trying to develop is 3D printing tools and parts needed when traveling through space. Resupply missions are already complicated and costly to do and the farther astronauts travel and drift away from Earth the harder these missions become. With this technology being developed, it will surely bring change in the way we look at space travel. 

Another technology NASA is working on is powered space flight on Mars. When the Perseverance Rover landed on mars a small helicopter was attached underneath it. Its main purpose is to test flight on Mars and see if it’s possible. The flight took place and it works which is huge. Moxie is a small box aiming to change carbon dioxide from the atmosphere of Mars into oxygen using the resources found on the planet. This Moxie will truly be a game-changer if it works because there will longer be the challenge of having no oxygen. 

So overall, what seemed like a farfetched idea of traveling to mars not long ago, has been progressing quickly, with the support of NASA and Elon Musk. Despite how difficult, dangerous, and expensive this potential trip will be, it seems like this idea is not so far away anymore and with the motivation of people like Elon Musk, and companies like NASA, Mars will soon be the first colonized planet outside of earth.
