Anti Vaxxers Risk Keeping Us in Masks Forever

Will the US ever reach herd immunity?  According to a few different articles experts are saying reaching herd immunity by fall may never happen if at all. With millions of Americans receiving the vaccine everyday, it still might not be enough for the US to reach herd immunity. According to the World Health Organization Herd immunity is “the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection”(  Experts think to reach herd immunity 70% to 90% of the U.S. population needs to be vaccinated. Daily vaccination rates have been declining over the past two weeks.

If the U.S. doesn’t reach herd immunity by fall the virus could spread easier in the colder weather and have more outbreaks again. Some experts say driving down infections to very low rates will be good enough even if we don’t reach herd immunity. With the number of people receiving the vaccine it is enough to slow down the spread drastically and help stop more outbreaks. Since this is a worldwide pandemic affecting millions of people there will always be different variants of the virus spreading to different parts of the world ultimately the virus will never be gone.

If more people choose to get the vaccine, and infection rates keep dropping, everything should be able to get back to normal.  However, if too many people refuse to get vaccinated, we may never fully get back to living our normal, pre-pandemic lives. Hopefully, enough people will get the vaccine, so we drive down infection rates and reach herd immunity. Only then can we all get our pre-Covid, normal lives back.
